Waterless vs water-based skincare: An introduction
Waterless skincare is the latest trend in clean beauty, and for all the right reasons. Before waterless skincare started changing the game, most beauty products were made up of at least 70% water. Not only is water-based skincare terrible for the environment, but water isn’t exactly the most potent ingredient for your skin. And even if it was, we’ve got our taps for that! Paying luxury prices for beauty products only to discover they’re watered down is no good for anyone.
Say bye-bye to water-based products
It’s a misconception that water-based products are hydrating for your skin. Water-based beauty can dehydrate your skin by messing with its moisture levels. That’s because it can alter the balance of natural oils on your skin, which are part of your skin’s defence against moisture loss. Water also evaporates at room temperature, and when it does, it can take your skin’s natural moisture along for the ride, leaving you with dryer, more irritated skin.
Water-based products also feed the harmful bacteria on your skin, which, other than being completely gross, can cause irritation, inflammation and spots. Water also encourages bacteria growth in your products, which is why brands pack water-based products full of synthetic preservatives and stabilisers. That’s a big no-no for the environment and your skin health!
If water is so bad, then why do so many beauty brands use it in their products? Why most people do anything – because it’s cheap. Brands use it as a filler so they don’t have to use as much of the high-quality ingredients.
Dive into waterless skincare
Today, around 1.2 billion people live in areas affected by water scarcity. Research by United Nations estimates that by 2025, that number will increase to 1.8 billion. If that’s not enough of a reason to banish water-based products from your beauty routine, read on for more.
Waterless beauty products are more potent
Without dilution from water, waterless cosmetics enable your skin to reap the full benefits of the powerful ingredients in them. Since waterless beauty brands are likely conscious of the environment, their products will probably be natural and cruelty-free. Here at NOOMI Stockholm, we use 100% natural ingredients in our waterless skincare. Potent botanical extracts, like organic birch sap from Nordic forests, make up the bulk of our flagship waterless beauty product, the BirchTech Hybrid Night Serum. Removing water from the picture means your skin can swiftly soak up the benefits of powerful plant oils and extracts.
Nordic Birch Sap
The organic birch sap we use in our anti-ageing BirchTech Hybrid Night Serum is derived from Birch trees in the depths of majestic Nordic forests. Nordic birch sap equals 55% of our BirchTech Hybrid. Organic birch sap is excellent for your skin, helping to repair the strength of your skin’s barriers and easing inflammation. It’s also a hell of a lot more hydrating than water is for your skin.
Amongst the other wholesome ingredients in our BirchTech Hybrid are arctic roseroot, which works to protect your skin to environmental toxins. Wild Swedish Lingonberry assists in boosting your skin’s hydration, elasticity and healthy glow and Chaga helps to adapt your skin to the effects of free radicals and stress. The addition of retinol works to plump up the skin and reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.
